ERBIL — The United States has again extended a waiver to allow Iraq to import electricity and natural gas from Iran for another 45 days, a US State Department spokesman said on Wednesday.

"The US has granted a 45-day waiver to allow Iraq to pay for electricity imports from Iran,” reads an official statement.

This will be the sixth waiver the US has issued for Iraq since US reimposed sanctions on Iran in November 2018.

After an initial 45-day waiver, the State Department issued two 90-day waivers in a row followed by two 120-day waivers in a row in June and then October.

Washington is pressuring Baghdad to take immediate measures to find an alternative to Iranian electricity and natural gas which remain vital for Iraq’s energy sector.
