Iceland’s Foreign Ministry said Tuesday, September 8, that it had summoned US Ambassador Billy Long after President Donald Trump shared a map on social media that appeared to depict Iceland as part of the United States.

Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir summoned Long to deliver what the ministry described as a clear message that the image was “wholly inappropriate.”

Trump posted the map on Monday without providing an explanation. The image showed North America, including Canada, Greenland, Mexico and Iceland, colored with the US flag, while the entire landmass was labeled “United States of America.”

The post has raised concerns in Iceland, which has no standing military of its own. Iceland gained independence in 1944 and relies heavily on the United States and NATO for its national security. The country is a founding member of NATO and has maintained a bilateral defense agreement with Washington since 1951.

Tensions have also grown over Trump’s repeated calls for the United States to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark located less than 300 kilometers from Iceland. His escalating trade dispute with Canada has further contributed to concerns in Iceland about Washington’s approach toward its northern neighbors.
