Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) said at least 20 of its fighters were killed and 32 others wounded after joint US-Saudi airstrikes targeted its official facilities across several Iraqi provinces early Wednesday.

In a statement, the PMF said the strikes hit bases and facilities in Baghdad, Wasit, Nineveh, Basra, Kirkuk, Karbala, and Diyala, causing extensive damage to military infrastructure, vehicles, weapons depots, and other equipment.

The group said specialized committees were conducting field assessments to determine the full extent of the damage, noting that the casualty figures remain preliminary and could increase as search and rescue operations continue.

The PMF condemned the attacks as a violation of Iraq’s sovereignty, describing the strikes on its official facilities as a serious threat to the country’s security institutions.

Earlier in the day, the PMF reported that its positions in Basra, Amerli, Nineveh, and Karbala had come under attack, stating that 10 fighters were killed and two others wounded in Basra alone.

The Nineveh Provincial Council expressed deep concern over the airstrikes, saying several locations within the province were targeted, resulting in casualties.

In a statement, the council emphasized the importance of safeguarding Iraq’s territorial sovereignty and ensuring the security and stability of Nineveh. It also reaffirmed its opposition to the province being used as a launch point for attacks against neighboring countries or becoming a battleground in wider regional conflicts.

The council extended its condolences to the families of those killed and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

Following the strikes, Iraqi Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ali Faleh al-Zaidi ordered an emergency meeting of the Ministerial Council for National Security.

According to Iraq’s Security Media Cell, the meeting was convened to assess the latest security developments following the early-morning bombardment. Officials said a detailed statement outlining the council’s findings and decisions would be released after the session.

According to reports, the joint US-Saudi operation targeted PMF positions, weapons depots, and military facilities linked to Iran-aligned armed groups across multiple Iraqi provinces.

The strikes were reportedly carried out in response to more than 30 drone attacks over the previous 72 hours, allegedly launched from Iraqi territory against Saudi energy facilities and US military bases in the region.
