President Barzani, U.S. Envoy Discuss Iraq Stability, Regional Security and Economic Cooperation
President Barzani on Tuesday received U.S. Ambassador Tom Barrack, the Special Envoy of President Donald Trump for Iraq and Syria, for talks focused on regional stability, Iraq’s political future, and strengthening economic ties.
During the meeting, Barrack conveyed President Trump’s greetings to President Barzani and praised his role in promoting stability in Iraq and the wider Middle East. He underscored the importance of stability in both Iraq and the region, describing the Kurdistan Region as a key pillar of security and a vital partner for future development.
The U.S. envoy also commended the Kurdistan Region’s achievements in economic growth and development, calling it a model for progress in the region.
President Barzani reaffirmed that the Kurdistan Region remains a consistent force for stability and continues to advocate dialogue and diplomatic solutions to address regional crises. He noted that while the Kurdistan Region has never been a source of conflict, it has frequently suffered the consequences of wars and regional tensions.
“The Middle East must move toward lasting stability so that its peoples can enjoy prosperity and well-being,” President Barzani said.
The discussions also focused on relations between the Kurdistan Region and Iraq’s new federal government. Barrack stressed the importance of protecting Iraq’s political system, preserving state sovereignty, and ensuring that all armed groups operate under the authority of the state. He reiterated U.S. support for efforts by the Iraqi prime minister to disarm militias and consolidate weapons under government control.
Regarding the formation of Iraq’s new government, President Barzani expressed support for Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, emphasizing the need to learn from past mistakes and govern according to the constitutional principles of partnership, balance, and consensus.
The two sides also exchanged views on broader regional developments and agreed to cooperate on a range of shared priorities aimed at strengthening stability in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Discussions included plans to deepen long-term strategic relations, particularly in the areas of economic cooperation and investment.
