PM Barzani, Iraqi Army Chief Discuss Security Cooperation and Protection of Energy Infrastructure
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Sunday received an Iraqi military delegation led by Abdul Amir Yarallah to discuss efforts aimed at maintaining security and stability, with a particular focus on addressing threats targeting oil companies operating in the Kurdistan Region.
According to a statement from the Kurdistan Regional Government, Yarallah briefed the prime minister on the purpose of the delegation’s visit, which was conducted under the direction of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi. The visit sought to follow up on measures designed to preserve security and stability and to prevent threats against oil companies and their facilities.
Prime Minister Barzani expressed appreciation for the Iraqi premier’s efforts and commitment to safeguarding peace and stability across the Kurdistan Region. He reaffirmed the KRG’s full support for initiatives aimed at strengthening security and protecting economic interests.
During the meeting, Barzani stressed the importance of enhancing coordination and cooperation between the Peshmerga Forces and the Iraqi Army to address security and military challenges. He emphasized that joint efforts are essential for maintaining stability and preventing threats.
The talks come amid growing concerns over attacks targeting energy infrastructure in the Kurdistan Region. In recent years, several oil and gas facilities have been subjected to drone and rocket attacks, prompting repeated calls from Erbil and international partners for stronger security measures and closer coordination between federal and regional authorities.
Security cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad has expanded in recent years through the establishment of joint coordination centers and combined operations aimed at preventing a resurgence of Islamic State in disputed territories across northern Iraq.
