Two Kurdish Boxers Reach Final at Nordic Championship in Finland
Two female boxers of Kurdish origin faced each other in the final of the women’s 60kg category at the Nordic Boxing Championship, held from March 27–29 in Vantaa.
Berivan Hassan won the gold medal after defeating Sirwa Palani, who secured silver. Although the two fighters represented different national teams—Sweden and Finland—their meeting in the final highlighted their shared Kurdish background.
Hassan advanced to the final after beating Norwegian boxer Helen Berg with a 4–1 decision in the semi-final. Palani, representing Finland, reached the championship bout without contest in the earlier rounds. In the final match, Hassan delivered a dominant performance, winning 5–0 and claiming the title in her first appearance at the tournament.
Speaking to Yariga Sport after the victory, Hassan described the win as a major breakthrough in her career. She noted that many of her opponents had greater experience but said her preparation and determination helped her secure the title.
“I had no prior experience in this tournament, but in my first participation, I managed to overcome rivals who have far more experience than I do,” Hassan said.
She added that her next goal is to compete for European championship gold after already achieving success at the national level in Sweden.
Meanwhile, Palani acknowledged the difficulty of the final match, describing her opponent as a strong competitor.
“A silver medal and a great disappointment. My opponent was a tough fighter,” Palani said, adding that she will continue her boxing career with the support of her team and coaches.
The championship brought together national teams from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Iceland, featuring athletes competing across multiple weight divisions in both men’s and women’s categories.
