Drone Attacks Strike Peshmerga Facilities in Kurdistan Region, Three Fighters Wounded
The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs announced on Wednesday that three Peshmerga fighters were wounded after drone attacks targeted military facilities in the provinces of Erbil and Sulaimaniyah.
In an official statement, the ministry said that two headquarters belonging to units affiliated with the ministry were struck by drones. The ministry condemned the attacks as terrorist acts and urged the Iraqi federal government to take immediate measures to prevent further assaults.
“We strongly condemn these terrorist acts,” the ministry said, adding that Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, who also serves as commander-in-chief of the Iraqi armed forces, must “assume his legal duty and set limits for these internal assaults.”
The statement emphasized the need for swift and decisive action to prevent armed groups from repeating attacks that threaten the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.
The attacks come amid a broader escalation of tensions in the region following the outbreak of hostilities on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched a joint military campaign against Iran. Since then, the Kurdistan Region has experienced a series of drone and missile attacks, some of which have been claimed by Iraqi armed factions aligned with Iran.
Earlier this month, a Peshmerga base near the Degala subdistrict in Erbil province was also targeted in a similar drone strike.
According to data compiled by Rudaw Media Network, the Kurdistan Region has witnessed a sharp surge in aerial attacks over the past 24 hours, with more than 10 drones launched toward Erbil province and over five toward Sulaimaniyah province.
On Tuesday evening, two drones were reported heading toward Koya district, while additional drones were directed toward the city of Erbil. Air defense systems intercepted and destroyed the incoming drones before they reached their intended targets.
Data gathered by Rudaw indicates that 352 drone and missile attacks have targeted the Kurdistan Region since the escalation began in late February.
Of these attacks:
290 targeted Erbil and surrounding areas
55 were aimed at Sulaimaniyah province
Five struck or fell within Duhok province
Two were directed toward border areas in Halabja province
The attacks have resulted in at least eight fatalities and 45 injuries.
Those killed include a member of the Asayish security forces at Erbil International Airport and six Peshmerga fighters belonging to Iranian Kurdish opposition groups.
Among the wounded are security personnel, Peshmerga fighters, foreign troops, and civilians. At least 13 civilians have been injured, including a delivery rider in Erbil, a nurse at Azadi camp in Koya, and a child in Sulaimaniyah.
Authorities in the Kurdistan Region have repeatedly called on the federal government in Baghdad to curb the activities of armed groups operating outside state control, warning that continued attacks could further destabilize the region.
