Russia Strikes Ukraine on Eve of War Anniversary as Hungary Blocks New EU Sanctions
Russia launched fresh attacks on several Ukrainian regions on Sunday, striking the southern and eastern parts of the country just one day before the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion that began in February 2022.
Ukrainian officials reported explosions and damage in the regions of Odesa, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia, as air defense systems attempted to intercept incoming missiles and drones. Local authorities said residential infrastructure and energy facilities were among the targets, though casualty figures were not immediately clear.
The latest strikes come as Ukraine prepares to mark four years since Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of its neighbor, triggering Europe’s largest land war since World War II.
In an interview with the BBC, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Putin has “already started” World War III, arguing that Russia’s actions extend beyond Ukraine and threaten broader global security. Zelenskyy called on Western allies to maintain military and financial support, saying hesitation would embolden Moscow.
Meanwhile, divisions have emerged within the European Union over additional punitive measures against Russia. Hungary has blocked the adoption of a 20th EU sanctions package, reportedly objecting to measures related to energy infrastructure and pipeline restrictions. Hungarian officials argue that further sanctions could harm their national energy security.
The European Union has imposed multiple rounds of sanctions on Russia since 2022, targeting banks, oligarchs, military industries, and oil exports. However, unanimous approval from all member states is required for new packages, giving individual countries the power to delay or veto decisions.
