Trump Presses North Atlantic Treaty Organization to Scale Back Iraq Mission, Refocus on Euro-Atlantic Security

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is facing renewed pressure from the United States under President Donald Trump to scale back several of its overseas operations, including a proposal to end the alliance’s advisory mission in Iraq, according to diplomats who spoke to Politico.

NATO diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the proposal is part of a broader White House effort to refocus the alliance on core Euro-Atlantic security priorities. The move reflects Washington’s view that NATO should concentrate more heavily on collective defense in Europe rather than missions beyond its traditional geographic scope.

Responding to the reports, a NATO official told Politico that there is currently “no timeline associated with NATO Mission Iraq,” emphasizing that such operations are determined by operational requirements and subject to periodic review. The official added that any decision to terminate the mission would require unanimous approval from all 32 NATO member states.

NATO’s non-combat advisory presence in Iraq was launched in 2018 during Trump’s first term in office. The mission aims to strengthen Iraqi security institutions and prevent the resurgence of the so-called Islamic State group. It was later expanded at the request of the Iraqi government.
