President Nechirvan Barzani Holds Key Diplomatic Meetings on Regional Stability at Munich Security Conference
At the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, President Nechirvan Barzani held a series of high-level meetings with senior international officials, focusing on regional stability, bilateral relations, and ongoing developments in the Middle East.
President Barzani met with Asaad al-Shaibani, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Syria. Their discussions centered on Syria’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as recent developments in Syria and their broader implications for regional peace and stability. Both sides stressed the importance of addressing the Syrian crisis and safeguarding the rights of all communities.
The humanitarian situation of refugees and the need to advance national dialogue toward a stable and unified future for Syria were also key topics. Minister al-Shaibani commended the leadership of the Kurdistan Region for its constructive role in the agreement between Damascus and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), its continued support for refugees, and its efforts to maintain regional stability. President Barzani expressed his wishes for peace and stability in Syria and underscored the importance of ensuring Kurdish rights in the future constitution of a unified Syrian state.
In a separate meeting, President Barzani met with Radosław Sikorski, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland. Discussions focused on strengthening relations between Poland and Iraq, as well as the Kurdistan Region, across multiple sectors. Both sides emphasized expanding cooperation in areas that promote economic growth and long-term stability. Minister Sikorski praised the Kurdistan Region’s role in promoting stability and reaffirmed Poland’s commitment to deepening ties with both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The meeting also included an exchange of views on the latest developments in the Middle East.
President Barzani also met with Allison Hooker, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs of the United States. Their talks addressed the strategic relationship between the United States and Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, and covered a range of issues of mutual concern. President Barzani emphasized the importance of continued U.S. assistance to support Iraq’s stability and institutional development.
Ms. Hooker commended President Barzani’s role in facilitating the agreement between Damascus and the SDF and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to supporting Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as helping resolve outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad.
The series of meetings underscored the Kurdistan Region’s active diplomatic engagement and its continued efforts to contribute to regional dialogue, stability, and cooperation.
