Macron Holds Talks with Syrian Leaders, SDF Commander on Ceasefire and Stability

French President Emmanuel Macron has held separate phone conversations with Syria’s interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander General Mazloum Abdi, focusing on developments in Syria and the implementation of a permanent ceasefire agreement, the Élysée Palace said on Sunday.

According to an official statement, Macron spoke on Saturday with both leaders as part of mediation efforts intensified in recent weeks. During the calls, he welcomed the permanent ceasefire agreement reached between the Syrian authorities and the SDF and stressed the importance of its full and effective implementation.

Macron reaffirmed France’s “total commitment” to supporting the agreement and ensuring it is carried out on the ground. He also emphasized France’s continued focus, alongside its partners, on the fight against ISIS, noting that counterterrorism efforts remain central to France’s security interests and those shared by the region, Europe, and the United States.

The Élysée Palace said France will continue to support Syria and the Syrian people, in coordination with international partners, as the country moves toward stability, justice, and reconstruction. The statement underscored France’s support for a peaceful Syria that respects all its components, particularly its Kurdish population, and reiterated Paris’s full engagement in combating terrorism.

The French diplomatic outreach comes amid broader regional engagement over Syria’s future. On Saturday evening, Kurdistan Democratic Party leader and former Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani also held a phone call with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. According to a statement from Barzani’s headquarters, the discussion addressed the political and security situation in Syria, recent developments, and the agreement reached between Damascus and the SDF.

Both sides stressed the importance of dialogue and mutual understanding as the only viable means to resolve disputes and achieve peace and stability in Syria.

In a separate call on Sunday, Barzani spoke with SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi, focusing on recent developments in Syria and the implementation of the agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF. The two leaders emphasized the need to address outstanding challenges through dialogue and peaceful engagement, warning against further escalation during a sensitive period marked by shifting political and security dynamics.
