The Kurdish-led administration in northeast Syria has accused forces aligned with Syria's interim government of committing "war crimes" against civilians in Aleppo, marking a severe escalation despite a nationwide ceasefire agreement.

In a statement released Sunday, the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) condemned what it called "ongoing severe violations amounting to war crimes" by factions affiliated with the Damascus-based Syrian Interim Government. The accusations focus on the predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsood and Ashrafiyeh in Aleppo.

The allegations follow deadly clashes that erupted last Tuesday between Syrian government forces, their allied jihadist factions, and the Kurdish internal security forces, known as Asayish. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Sunday that the violence has left at least 82 people dead, including 43 civilians, 38 government-aligned militants, and one Asayish member. Syrian state television, citing Aleppo health authorities, reported 24 fatalities and 129 wounded since the fighting began.

DAANES asserted that "a lot of evidence" suggests some factions fighting alongside Damascus are "composed of former Islamic State (ISIS) members" who have targeted civilians. The administration stated these actions represent a "clear and flagrant breach" of past agreements that guaranteed civilian safety.

The violence strikes at the heart of a landmark ceasefire deal reached in March between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the military wing of the Kurdish administration. While talks between the two sides are ongoing, Syrian state media reported that the latest round on Sunday failed to achieve tangible results.

The humanitarian situation is rapidly deteriorating. The Barzani Charity Foundation reported on Saturday that an estimated 150,000 residents have fled the affected neighborhoods, raising fears of ethnic cleansing. Most have been relocated north to the Afrin region.

DAANES further accused the factions of systematic violations, including "arbitrary arrests, insults, humiliation, and degradation of civilians." Unverified videos circulating online appear to show Damascus-affiliated militants detaining Kurdish civilians, subjecting them to verbal abuse, and desecrating corpses while using derogatory language.
