Renewed Clashes in Aleppo Force Mass Evacuation of Civilians

Intense fighting between Syrian government forces and Kurdish-led security units has resumed for a second day in the city of Aleppo, resulting in civilian casualties and the evacuation of more than 2,300 people from their homes.

The clashes have centered on the Kurdish-majority neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsood and Ashrafiyeh. Confrontations there between factions aligned with the Damascus government and the Internal Security Forces of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have involved heavy weaponry, triggering a new wave of displacement.

The Syrian Civil Defense, under the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management, reported that 2,324 civilians had been evacuated via the Awarz and Zuhur Street corridors by Wednesday afternoon. The operation was launched in response to a rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation, with medical teams providing first aid to those injured in the violence.

Local officials describe a dire scene for residents who remain. Nuri Shekho, co-chairman of the neighborhood councils, told Kurdistan24 that areas are under sustained assault from multiple directions.

“We are being attacked with heavy weapons, resulting in civilian casualties,” Shekho said. He reported at least eight civilians killed and 47 wounded since the fighting escalated.

The SDF’s Internal Security Forces have accused pro-government factions of imposing a siege on Sheikh Maqsood and launching indiscriminate attacks, warning that these actions constitute serious human rights violations.

The instability has also disrupted vital infrastructure. Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation extended the suspension of flights at Aleppo International Airport until Thursday at 11 p.m., citing the deteriorating security situation. Flights are being redirected to Damascus International Airport pending further security and technical reviews.
