KRG Says Power Output Recovering Rapidly After Drone Strike on Khor Mor Gas Field
Kurdistan Region officials say electricity generation is quickly returning to normal levels after a drone attack severely disrupted operations at the Khor Mor gas field last week.
Kamal Mohammed Salih, the Kurdistan Region’s minister of electricity and acting minister of natural resources, told reporters on Sunday that current power production has reached around 2,000 megawatts and is expected to climb to 4,000–4,500 megawatts by late afternoon, fully restoring pre-attack supply levels.
“Before the attack, Khor Mor was producing 530 million standard cubic feet of gas. Today it has reached 404 million — around 76 percent. We expect full recovery within a few hours,” he said.
The minister condemned the attack and emphasized that it “cannot be allowed to pass easily,” confirming that a high-level security committee is investigating the incident and will release its findings publicly. “Those responsible must be identified and brought before the courts,” he added.
Mohammed also stated that both the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Dana Gas, the UAE-based operator of the Khor Mor field, are jointly calling for the installation of an air-defense system to prevent future strikes. He noted that the federal government in Baghdad is now “seriously engaged” on the issue.
As part of emergency coordination, Baghdad delivered the first shipment of household LPG to the Kurdistan Region following the attack. Mohammed said the attackers had intended to disrupt cooking gas supplies as well, “but our coordination with Baghdad foiled that plan.”
He added that Prime Minister Masrour Barzani closely monitored the situation overnight and instructed officials to expedite solutions to the power disruption. “We appreciate the patience of citizens and assure them that power conditions are improving,” he said.
The drone strike occurred around 11:30 p.m. on November 26, hitting the Khor Mor facility in Chamchamal district, Sulaymaniyah province. Although no casualties were reported, the attack temporarily reduced the Region’s electricity generation by nearly 80 percent, according to a joint statement from the ministries of electricity and natural resources.
Khor Mor is one of the Kurdistan Region’s most vital energy assets, providing gas for major power plants across the Region. The field has suffered multiple drone and rocket attacks in recent years, largely attributed to armed groups operating in disputed or federally controlled territories, raising ongoing concerns about the security of critical infrastructure.
