President Barzani Meets with Peshmerga Veterans and Political Prisoners in Duhok

President Masoud Barzani held a meeting this afternoon in the city of Duhok with members of the Peshmerga from the September and May “Gulan” Foundations, as well as political prisoners from Duhok Province.

In his address, President Barzani expressed deep appreciation for the veterans’ and former prisoners’ sacrifices, resilience, and long struggle for the Kurdish cause. He emphasized that the freedoms and achievements enjoyed today are the outcome of their dedication, the sacrifices of the martyrs, and the perseverance of the Kurdish people.

“The freedom and progress we see today are the results of God’s grace, the blood of martyrs, the tears of their mothers, and your endurance in the face of great hardship,” President Barzani said. “It is an honor for me to be among you.”

The President also reviewed the recent elections in the Kurdistan Region and in Iraq, highlighting the electoral processes and the challenges that emerged due to Baghdad’s failure to adhere to the Iraqi Constitution. He noted that this lack of commitment has contributed to ongoing disputes between Erbil and Baghdad.

Reflecting on the history of oppression and genocide faced by the Kurdish people, President Barzani stated that despite decades of destruction and injustice, Kurdistan has made significant progress. “We have worked tirelessly to rebuild and develop Kurdistan,” he said. “Although many obstacles have been placed before us, we will continue our mission to serve our people and advance our nation. There are still challenges and conspiracies aimed at halting our progress, but with the help of God and the support of our people, we will move forward with confidence.”

President Barzani warned of new forms of threats facing Kurdish society, describing them as “a major battle” aimed at weakening social cohesion and spreading despair, particularly through the proliferation of drugs. He called for the same spirit of resistance that characterized the Peshmerga’s frontline battles to be demonstrated in political and civic life, including during elections.

He also underscored the importance of self-reliance, noting that Kurdistan has repeatedly faced serious attacks and that it was always the Peshmerga who stood firm in defense of the land and its people.

Discussing the region’s internal development, President Barzani highlighted the successful completion of numerous major projects and the ongoing implementation of larger ones, many of which have been executed by local expertise to high international standards.

“We draw our strength from our people and the Peshmerga,” he affirmed. “We will never relinquish our rights or our principles, regardless of the pressure we face.”
