Young Sulaimani Artist Chawan Rahim Explores the Human Psyche in Powerful New Exhibition

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region – A new exhibition by emerging Sulaimani artist Chawan Rahim transforms a local gallery into an immersive architectural space for a profound dialogue on the human condition, focusing on the invisible psychological shields known as defense mechanisms.

Titled as a visual inquiry into the psyche, the exhibition features 21 large-scale oil paintings, each an imposing two and a half meters high and one and a half meters wide. The works are arranged in a striking circular formation, compelling visitors to step inside an environment where the towering canvases seem to lean in, fostering an intimate and contemplative atmosphere.

The unique circular layout is a deliberate narrative choice. Each painting is split into two distinct sections—an inner and an outer part—that visually represent the central theme: the divide between our internal emotional struggles and the external personas we project to the world.

A recent graduate of the College of Fine Arts at Sulaimani University, Rahim credits her academic journey with shaping her distinct artistic voice. In an interview with Kurdistan24, she revealed that her passion for art was not preordained but discovered through her studies.

"When I first entered college, I did not have extensive knowledge in art," Rahim stated. "With the help of my professors, I was able to explore different fields and choose the one that suited me."

This period of exploration culminated in her adoption of Expressionism (derbrînxwazî), a style that prioritizes raw inner emotion over objective reality. This approach proves to be the perfect vehicle for her subject matter.

"My working style is influenced by the experiences I had with my professors at college," she explained. "I have tried to find my own unique working method and to showcase the most important societal issues through my art."

Through evocative and powerful brushstrokes, Rahim gives tangible form to abstract psychological concepts. The paintings dissect the conscious and unconscious behaviors—such as denial, repression, and projection—that individuals use to protect themselves from anxiety and emotional conflict.
