Erbil International Airport Resumes Flights to Europe After Airspace Closure
Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Erbil International Airport has officially resumed flights to several European destinations, including Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands, following a temporary suspension due to regional tensions. The announcement was made by Lund Mamundi, head of the Kurdistan Region's Airlines Union, who confirmed that operations would restart on Saturday, June 28, 2025, beginning with the Copenhagen route.
Mamundi stated that the resumption of flights would allow numerous citizens from East Kurdistan (Iranian Kurdistan) who had been stranded in Europe due to the airspace closure to finally return home without further delays. He urged other airlines to follow suit and reinstate their routes through Erbil International Airport.
Before the recent escalation between Iran and Israel, the airport handled around 70 daily round-trip flights. However, the conflict led to the cancellation of approximately 1,200 flights, according to data from the Ministry of Transportation.
Mamundi assured that airlines would increase flight frequencies in the coming week to compensate for the disruptions over the past two weeks. He also emphasized that measures were being taken to prevent ticket price surges amid high demand.
Ahmed Hoshyar, Director of Erbil International Airport, had earlier announced the resumption of direct flights to Europe starting Friday, June 27, with Copenhagen as the first destination. He expressed confidence that all flight schedules would return to normal in the coming days.
