SDF Captures Suspected ISIS Operative in Joint Operation with US-Led Coalition in Northeast Syria

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Tuesday the capture of a suspected Islamic State (ISIS) member during a joint operation with the US-led coalition in northeast Syria’s Hasaka province.

The detained individual, identified as Waddah Marwan Taisan (also known as Al-Awdah), was apprehended in the Til Kochar area near the Iraqi border during a “special security operation” conducted on May 22.

According to an SDF statement, Taisan was responsible for managing several Telegram accounts linked to ISIS, which were used to propagate the group’s extremist ideology. “He promoted fabricated narratives and false claims to recruit youth into the terrorist organization,” the statement added.

The arrest comes amid a surge in ISIS activities in the region, with the militant group stepping up attacks against SDF forces and civilians. Analysts suggest that ISIS is attempting to exploit the security vacuum caused by ongoing instability following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Though ISIS lost its territorial “caliphate” in Syria in 2019—two years after its defeat in Iraq—the group has been regrouping and escalating insurgent operations. The SDF, backed by the United States and serving as the de facto military force in the autonomous region of Rojava, has been actively working to thwart ISIS’s resurgence.

This latest operation follows another successful raid earlier in June, when the SDF detained an ISIS operative in the notorious al-Hol camp, a facility housing thousands of ISIS families and known as a hotspot for extremist activity.
