President Barzani Hosts Tribal Delegation from Southern and Central Iraq, Stresses Unity and Constitutional Rights

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – President Masoud Barzani received a high-profile delegation of tribal princes, sheikhs, and dignitaries from southern and central Iraq on Sunday at his residence in Salahaddin Resort. The meeting focused on strengthening national unity, addressing political disputes, and reaffirming the rights of the Kurdistan Region within Iraq’s constitutional framework.

The visiting leaders expressed deep appreciation for President Barzani’s efforts in promoting stability and intercommunal harmony. They also commended the Kurdistan Region for its humanitarian support, particularly in sheltering displaced Iraqis during the war against terrorism.

"The people of Kurdistan have shown unwavering solidarity with their fellow Iraqis in times of crisis," said one tribal leader. "We recognize the legitimacy of their demands and stand with them in their pursuit of justice."

The delegation also praised the Kurdistan Region’s progress in development and governance, despite political and economic challenges imposed by Baghdad.

Barzani Calls for Constitutional Reforms and Rejects Politicized Punitive Measures
In his address, President Barzani highlighted historical grievances faced by the Kurdish people under successive Iraqi governments but stressed that these disputes should not divide Iraq’s diverse communities.

"The wrong policies of past governments must not be allowed to undermine brotherhood among Iraq’s people," Barzani stated. "True stability can only be achieved through constitutional rights, balance, and fair power-sharing."

He strongly criticized the Iraqi federal government for using economic pressure, including budget cuts and withheld salaries, as political leverage against Kurdistan.

"Withholding public servants’ salaries and essential resources as a bargaining tool is unacceptable," Barzani said. "Iraq’s stability depends on implementing the constitution—not on marginalization or coercion."

Both sides emphasized the need for dialogue and cooperation to resolve ongoing disputes between Erbil and Baghdad. The tribal leaders affirmed their support for a federal Iraq where all regions, including Kurdistan, enjoy their constitutional rights.

President Barzani concluded by expressing hope for a prosperous and united Iraq, where the rights of all citizens are protected.

This meeting marks a significant step in bridging political divides and fostering broader alliances between Kurdistan and other Iraqi communities amid ongoing negotiations with the federal government.
