Prime Minister Masrour Barzani Inspects Major Emergency Water Project in Erbil
Erbil, Kurdistan Region — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani visited the emergency water supply project in Erbil on Tuesday, inspecting progress on one of Iraq’s largest water infrastructure undertakings.
Launched in September 2024, the project aims to transport water from the Great Zab River to Erbil, providing a sustainable solution to the city’s long-standing water shortage. During the site visit, project supervisors and engineers briefed the Prime Minister on the progress made, reporting that more than 75% of the work has already been completed.
Designed to ensure the delivery of purified, high-quality water, the project is now ahead of schedule and is expected to be completed within the current year—earlier than initially planned.
Prime Minister Barzani commended the efforts of the company executing the project, extending his gratitude to the engineers, supervisors, and all workers involved. He praised their professionalism, dedication, and adherence to guidelines, emphasizing the project’s vital role in improving the quality of life for the people of Erbil.
“This is a strategic step toward securing clean and reliable water for our citizens,” Barzani stated, highlighting the significance of the initiative in addressing the region’s growing water needs.
Water scarcity has been a major problem for several neighborhoods in Erbil. The Erbil Water Supply Emergency Project — one of the largest water projects in Iraq — will bring an end to this decades-old issue.
