Kurdistan Leaders Extend New Year Greetings to Yezidi Community, Pledge Support for Rights and Rebuilding Efforts

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Prominent Kurdish leaders, including former President Masoud Barzani, current President Nechirvan Barzani, and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, issued separate messages congratulating the Yezidi community on the occasion of the Yezidi New Year. The leaders expressed their hopes for peace, prosperity, and the protection of Yezidi rights while reaffirming their commitment to rebuilding Sinjar and ensuring the safe return of displaced families.

President Masoud Barzani Calls for End to Yezidi Suffering

In his heartfelt message, former Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani extended warm wishes to Yezidis in Kurdistan and worldwide, praying for a year filled with happiness and stability. He emphasized the need to end the suffering caused by past atrocities, particularly those committed by extremist groups, and called for collective efforts to help Yezidis reclaim their rights, culture, and homelands.

"We must work together to ensure our Yezidi brothers and sisters can determine their own future, heal their wounds, and return to their homes with dignity," Barzani stated.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani also congratulated the Yezidi community, highlighting the region’s dedication to tolerance and mutual respect. He stressed that the Kurdistan Region remains a stronghold of peaceful coexistence among all communities.

"We stand by our Yezidi brothers and sisters in protecting their rights and aspirations. Kurdistan will always be a land of diversity and harmony," President Barzani said.

PM Masrour Barzani Pledges Continued Support for Sinjar’s Reconstruction

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, in his official statement, reiterated his government’s commitment to normalizing conditions in Sinjar and accelerating reconstruction efforts. He emphasized the importance of a dignified return for displaced Yezidis and the preservation of their cultural identity.

"Our priority is to rebuild Sinjar, restore stability, and ensure that every displaced family can return safely and with honor," the Prime Minister affirmed.

Yezidi New Year and Ongoing Challenges

The Yezidi New Year, known as "Çarşema Sor" (Red Wednesday), is a sacred celebration marking renewal and hope. However, the community continues to face challenges, particularly after the 2014 genocide by ISIS, which led to mass displacement and destruction in Sinjar.

Kurdish authorities have repeatedly pledged to support Yezidis in reclaiming their lands and rebuilding their lives. The latest statements from Kurdistan’s leadership reinforce these commitments amid ongoing efforts for justice, reconstruction, and reconciliation.

International Reactions

Human rights organizations and foreign diplomats have welcomed the Kurdish leaders’ messages, urging continued international support for Yezidi recovery and accountability for past crimes.

As the Yezidi community celebrates the New Year, the emphasis remains on healing, justice, and the hope for a brighter future in their ancestral homeland.
