Kurdistan Region Presidency Condemns Attack on Christian Citizens Celebrating Akitu in Duhok

The Presidency of the Kurdistan Region has strongly condemned the criminal attack targeting Christian citizens during Akitu celebrations in Duhok, which left two people injured.

Authorities confirmed that they are closely monitoring the incident and have launched an investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. The Kurdistan Region reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace, coexistence, and stability for all communities, emphasizing that such acts of violence will not be tolerated.

In an official statement, the Kurdistan Region Presidency said, “We reassure all our citizens that the Region remains a bastion of coexistence and mutual acceptance. The principles of tolerance and peace will never be compromised, and those responsible for this crime will face legal consequences.”

Akitu, the Assyrian-Babylonian New Year, is celebrated by Christian communities in the Kurdistan Region as a cultural and religious occasion. The attack has drawn widespread condemnation, with calls for enhanced security measures to protect minority groups.

Local officials have vowed to ensure the safety of all citizens and prevent any attempts to disrupt the Region’s longstanding tradition of harmony among its diverse communities. Further updates on the investigation are expected in the coming days.
