U.S. Monitors Syria After President Al-Sharaa Signs Constitutional Declaration

The United States is closely monitoring developments in Syria following the signing of a constitutional declaration by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce announced during a press briefing on Tuesday.

Bruce expressed concerns over the declaration, which critics fear could lead to the consolidation of power by al-Sharaa. “We are following developments that Ahmed al-Sharaa signed, I guess, a so-called constitutional declaration, and note concerns expressed around consolidation of power by al-Sharaa,” she stated.

The spokesperson reiterated Washington’s call for an inclusive, civilian-led government in Syria, emphasizing the importance of establishing national institutions that are “effective, responsive, legitimate, and representative.” Bruce also highlighted that the U.S. is closely observing the actions of Syria’s interim authorities to determine whether they uphold equal rights and individual freedoms as outlined in the declaration.

“We continue to watch, and I think that will bear out the nature of what it is we are dealing with,” she added.

Al-Sharaa’s constitutional declaration has drawn criticism from opposition groups, who warn that it could undermine efforts toward a democratic transition in Syria. Critics argue that the move may centralize power and weaken the prospects for a pluralistic political system.

Concluding her remarks, Bruce reaffirmed U.S. support for the Syrian people, stating, “Bottom line, we continue to stand with the people of Syria.”

The declaration comes amid ongoing instability in Syria, where efforts to achieve lasting peace and political reform remain fraught with challenges. The U.S. and its allies have consistently advocated for a political solution that ensures the rights and aspirations of all Syrians are addressed.

As the situation evolves, the international community continues to watch closely, with many urging al-Sharaa’s administration to prioritize inclusivity and democratic principles in its governance.
