US Ambassador to Iraq Alina Romanowski Issues Statement on International Day of Peace

On the occasion of International Day of Peace, US Ambassador to Iraq Alina Romanowski released a statement addressing the ongoing threats to Iraq’s security, stability, and sovereignty. Her remarks come as tensions rise in the region, exacerbated by the Gaza conflict and the activities of Iranian-backed militia groups targeting US forces in both Iraq and Syria.

Ambassador Romanowski emphasized the critical need for collective efforts to foster a peaceful and prosperous future for Iraq. “On International Day of Peace, we are reminded that threats to Iraq’s security, stability, and sovereignty persist,” she stated, highlighting the various challenges the nation faces, including political instability and the resurgence of extremist groups.

The ambassador reaffirmed the US commitment to working with partners in the Iraqi government and civil society. “We are committed to working alongside our partners to promote a peaceful, prosperous Iraq for generations to come,” she said, reiterating the US dedication to supporting Iraq amidst its struggles.

Her statement arrives as the US is negotiating the withdrawal of 2,500 troops by 2026, a process that is nearing completion, coinciding with concerns over the potential revival of the Islamic State in the region. The US continues to focus on collaboration with Iraqi officials to address these pressing security concerns.
