Iraqi Police Forces Clash with Contract Protesters at Ziqar Oil Company, Resulting in Injuries
Clashes between Iraqi police forces and contract protesters erupted on Sunday in front of the Ziqar Oil Company in Dhi Qar province, leading to multiple injuries among demonstrators. The protesters were demanding permanent employment with the Dhi Qar Oil Company and attempted to shut down the company's operations as part of their demonstration.
Eyewitnesses and local sources reported that the confrontation turned violent, with police using force against the demonstrators. Video footage from the scene depicts one protester suffering serious injuries, though it remains unclear what methods or weapons were employed by the police. Notably, one demonstrator sustained severe back injuries, evident from significant bruising, while another was shown with blood in his eyes after being severely beaten.
The unrest in Dhi Qar follows a similar incident last Sunday, where security forces confronted oil engineering graduates demonstrating in front of the Shuaiba refinery in Basra. Video evidence from Basra showed security personnel surrounding and beating one of the protesters, with several others being arrested. The footage also captured the distressing sounds of women demonstrators shouting in the background.
Local sources indicated that approximately 315 contract workers and oil engineers participated in the Basra protest, all seeking permanent employment in Iraq's vital oil sector. These demonstrations reflect a broader pattern of discontent among contract workers and recent graduates, highlighting their struggle for stable employment amidst Iraq's challenging economic landscape.
