New US sanctions on Belarus after forced diversion of Ryanair flight
The White House has announced on Friday that the United States has imposed new sanctions on Belarus for forcing a passenger plane to land in Minsk, a plane carrying an activist journalist.
The U.S. presidential spokeswoman, Jen-Psaki, said in a statement that the sending of a warplane belonging to the European company Ryanair by the Alexander Lukashenko regime to force the plane to land and arrest a journalist and activist, Roman Brotassicovich, is “a direct affront to international norms”.
Jen-Psaki explained that the sanctions would cover nine Belarusian companies and state officials, adding that the United States was still considering imposing harsher sanctions on Belarus.
