Saxony's politicians present three-party coalition contract
Dresden (dpa) - Representatives from the Christian Democrats (CDU), Greens and the Social Democrats (SPD) in Saxony presented their coalition contract on Sunday, nearly three months after state elections in the eastern German state.

Once the coalition becomes official, it will be the first time that Saxony is governed by a three-party alliance since reunification in 1990.

After Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg, Saxony's government would also be Germany's third so-called "Kenya" coalition, named thus because the three parties' colours, black, red and green, match those of the Kenyan flag.

The SPD and Greens will put the coalition agreement to vote among their party members. Once it is finally approved, the government could be in place before Christmas.

The CDU won 32.1 per cent of the vote on September 1, the strongest party ahead of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) which won 27.5 per cent. They were followed by the hard-left Die Linke with 10.4 per cent, the Greens with 8.6 per cent and the SPD with 7.7 per cent.

The premier of the state of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer of the CDU, had already ruled out coalitions with Die Linke and the AfD.

"The aim is to form a stable government for the next five years that will serve the state without unnecessary conflict," Kretschmer said at the outset of the talks.

The parties said they saw sustainability, solid finances, and social cohesion as the main challenges in their work.

Some of the points of contention included changes to the education system, the requirement that police officers be easily identifiable, transport policy and a public procurement law.
