Canada "Strongly" Condemns Escalating Violence in Iraq
"Canada strongly condemns the escalating violence in Iraq, which has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of protestors and injured thousands more," Global Affairs Canada said in a statement. "We urge all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from violence."
People in central and southern cities of Iraq have been taking to the streets against the poor public services, corruption, and unemployment since early October. Over 330 people have so far been killed and more than 16,000 others suffered from injuries.
"We support the people of Iraq, who deserve stability, prosperity and security. Their human and democratic rights-including the right to protest and freedom of expression-must be protected," the statement added.
"Canada encourages a dialogue to advance political and economic reforms and ensure a better future for all Iraqis. We will continue to work closely with our allies and partners to follow the situation and play a constructive role."
According to the latest updates on the evolving situation in Iraq, PM Adil Abdul Mahdi has declared that he would hand in his resignation to the parliament, hoping that the Council of Representatives would explore all the options to meet the protesters' demands after he leaves office.
