Erbil Opposes Amendment to Iraqi Constitution Unless Kurds’ Rights are Preserved: PM
ERBIL - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani made it clear that Erbil opposes any amendments to the Iraqi Constitution if the rights of the Kurdish people are not preserved.

Barzani made the remarks during a meeting of the Kurdistan Region's Council of Ministers on Wednesday, during which, officials shed light on a range of issues, including the latest developments in Iraq and the Syrian Kurdistan.

PM Barzani called on all Kurdish political parties to unite and ensure that the constitutional rights of the people of Kurdistan Region are protected.

Concerning the recent protests in Iraq, Barzani noted that the current tensions do not serve any sides, reiterating support to his Iraqi counterpart Adil Abdul Mahdi's steps towards reforms.

He, however, said that the Kurdistan Region also supports the peaceful demonstrations by the Iraqi people, but rejects any violence by the protesters or the security forces.

The Kurdish premier further reminded that the Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga forces played a significant role in defeating the Islamic State (IS), while noting that the death of the group's top leader Abu Bakir Al-Baghdadi does not mean the end of fhe extremist group.

"Killing of Baghdadi was significant, but this is not the end of Daesh and terror," Barzani said.

Discussing the latest developments in the Syrian Kurdistan, where Turkey has launched an offensive against the Kurdish forces, was also on the agenda.

The Kurdistan Region's Council of Ministers approved a proposal by Interior Minister Reband Ahmed to establish a permanent funding box which will allow the Iraqi government, UN agencies, and other related organizations to provide humanitarian assistance to the refugees fleeing from the Syrian Kurdistan to the Kurdistan Region.
