UK investigates reports that British man has died fighting Isis in Syria
The man, whose name has not been confirmed, is said to have been a former Royal Marine who was fighting with Kurdish forces in the north-east of the country.
If his death is confirmed he will be the first UK national to have died fighting with the Kurds against Isis militants.
A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We are aware of reports of the death of a British national in Syria... As we do not have any representation in Syria, it is extremely difficult to get any confirmation of deaths or injuries and our options for supporting British nationals there are extremely limited.”
A man who said he was an American fighting for the Kurdish forces posted a message on Facebook on Thursday saying the British national had died. The post was later removed.
A BBC journalist said a senior Kurdish commander had confirmed to him a British man had died fighting Isis.
The Guardian has been unable to verify the claims.
