Iraq has received a new fleet of Chinese-built passenger boats and ferries that will be deployed on maritime routes connecting the country with Arab Gulf states, marking another step in Baghdad's efforts to modernize its transportation sector and enhance regional connectivity.

According to Iraq's Ministry of Transport, the newly acquired fleet includes 15 tourist boats, two passenger ferries with a capacity of 200 passengers each, and one larger multi-purpose ferry capable of carrying 500 passengers and up to 80 vehicles per voyage.

The ministry said the vessels will operate on new maritime routes between Iraq and neighboring Arab Gulf countries, providing faster and more efficient passenger transport while supporting regional trade, tourism, and economic cooperation.

Officials described the acquisition as part of Iraq's broader strategy to upgrade its maritime transportation infrastructure and diversify its transport network by strengthening sea links alongside existing road and air connections.

The ministry added that the new fleet is expected to significantly increase passenger and vehicle transport capacity while improving the safety, reliability, and efficiency of maritime travel as demand for regional mobility continues to grow.

The announcement comes as Iraq advances several major transportation projects, including the near completion of a new marina on the Shatt al-Arab waterway and the ongoing development of the Grand Faw Port. The government views these initiatives as key components of its long-term vision to establish Iraq as a major regional transportation, trade, and logistics hub.
