Iraq Parliament to Vote on Ali al-Zaidi’s Cabinet and Government Program Thursday
The Iraqi Council of Representatives is scheduled to hold its 24th regular session on Thursday, where lawmakers are expected to vote on the proposed government program and ministerial cabinet submitted by Prime Minister-designate Ali Faleh al-Zaidi.
According to the official parliamentary agenda, the session will begin at 4:00 p.m. and will focus primarily on granting confidence to the incoming government.
Political blocs and parliamentary factions have reportedly reached a final framework agreement regarding the distribution of ministerial positions. Under the arrangement, each political faction submitted three nominees for every ministry to the prime minister-designate for review and selection.
In accordance with constitutional and legal procedures, the proposed candidates have also been referred to the Iraqi National Commission for Accountability and Justice for vetting before the parliamentary vote.
A source familiar with the process said a complete list of nominees has already been finalized, while a special committee has been established to examine the candidates ahead of Thursday’s session.
Earlier this month, al-Zaidi formally presented his cabinet lineup and government program to Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, though no date had initially been announced for the confidence vote.
Under the Iraqi Constitution, a prime minister-designate is required to form a government and obtain parliamentary approval within 30 days of nomination.
Government formation in Iraq traditionally follows a power-sharing system among the country’s major political factions, a process that frequently results in extended negotiations and delays in cabinet formation.
Al-Zaidi was officially tasked with forming the new government on April 27, beginning the constitutional deadline for securing parliamentary approval of his cabinet.
