Barzani Calls for Kurdish Unity and International Action on Western Kurdistan at Bonn Rally

Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), on Saturday reaffirmed his support for Western Kurdistan in Syria, warning of emerging threats and urging the international community to uphold its responsibilities toward the Kurdish people.

Barzani’s message was delivered by Shifa Barzani, Director General of the Kurdistani Diaspora Confederation, during a large demonstration organized by the confederation in the German city of Bonn. The rally drew thousands of Kurds and members of the Kurdistani diaspora, who gathered to express solidarity with Western Kurdistan amid heightened political and security developments.

In his statement, Barzani praised the unity shown by Kurds and other Kurdistani communities abroad, describing their mobilization as a source of pride and a reflection of a unified stance in defense of Kurdish rights across all parts of Kurdistan.

Referring to Kurdish history, Barzani said the division of Kurdistan in the 20th century constituted a historic injustice, but decades of repression and hardship had only strengthened Kurdish determination to achieve their legitimate rights. He paid tribute to the sacrifices made in Western Kurdistan, highlighting years of displacement, imprisonment, and suffering, as well as the role Kurdish forces played in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS).

“The blood of Kurdish youth formed a shield not only for Kurdistan but for humanity,” the statement said, stressing that protecting Kurdistan and its people is now a moral and humanitarian obligation.

Barzani warned that Western Kurdistan is entering a new and complex phase marked by new challenges and threats, emphasizing that supporting the region’s population is a national duty for Kurds everywhere. He called on the international community, particularly Western countries, to act responsibly to prevent further humanitarian crises.

Emphasizing national unity, Barzani said political differences, borders, and divergent viewpoints cannot weaken the deep historical and national bonds among Kurds, describing them as one nation with a shared destiny. He urged demonstrators to continue their activities peacefully and in accordance with the laws of their host countries.

He also reiterated that the Kurdish issue is a struggle with political regimes rather than with other peoples, warning against ethnic hatred and reaffirming that the Kurdish message has consistently been one of peace, coexistence, and humanity.

On the political front, Barzani called on the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to preserve the ceasefire and prioritize dialogue and mutual understanding. He stressed that the political, civil, and national rights of the Kurdish people must be guaranteed in Syria’s future constitution.

His remarks came after the SDF and the Syrian government announced a comprehensive agreement aimed at ending hostilities and integrating military, security, and administrative structures in Western Kurdistan. According to information released by the SDF, the agreement includes a full ceasefire, the withdrawal of forces from front lines, and the deployment of Syrian Interior Ministry units to the centers of Hasakah and Qamishlo, as well as steps to integrate the Asayish internal security forces into the state framework.

The deal also предусматри (provides) for the formation of a new military division composed of three SDF brigades and a special Kobani brigade under Aleppo province’s command. Administratively, institutions of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria are to be brought under Syrian state authority, while ensuring the continuation of civil services, the protection of Kurdish civil and educational rights, and the return of internally displaced persons.

During the rally, participants recalled Barzani’s 2014 decision to send Peshmerga forces to support Kobani, widely regarded as a landmark moment of Kurdish unity. Diaspora groups said they aim to build on that precedent by intensifying diplomatic advocacy to secure constitutional guarantees for Kurdish rights in a future Syrian state and to prevent further military or political escalation against Rojava.

Barzani concluded his message by urging Kurds everywhere to remain hopeful and to continue placing their trust in the legitimacy of their national cause, underscoring unity, dialogue, and peaceful action as the path forward.
