Kurdistan Region and Spain to Hold Exclusive Investment Forum in Madrid

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – The Kurdistan Region’s Investment Board has announced that preparations are actively underway for a joint investment forum with Spain, scheduled to be held in Madrid next April.

According to information obtained by BasNews, the forum will serve as a dedicated platform to bring together investors exclusively from the Kurdistan Region and Spain. The primary objective is to forge new agreements, expand bilateral cooperation, and facilitate the exchange of expertise.

The focus will be on key economic sectors where Spanish companies have already established a footprint in the Kurdistan Region, notably in industry, agriculture, and commercial projects.

Bergesh Akreyi, the official spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region Investment Board, confirmed the details to BasNews, stating, “Preparations are underway, and the forum will be held in April next year. It is a unique event exclusively for investors from the Kurdistan Region and Spain; no investors from other countries will participate.”

Akreyi added that nearly 60 local investors from the Kurdistan Region are expected to participate. The event is anticipated to yield several agreements and memoranda of understanding, particularly in the industrial and agricultural sectors.

This initiative reflects a growing interest from Spanish investors. Last year, a Spanish company submitted a proposal to establish a railway line in the Region, signaling Madrid's increasing attention to the investment opportunities there.

Economic relations between the Kurdistan Region and Spain have been steadily deepening over the past decade. Spanish firms have consistently shown interest in various sectors, including infrastructure, renewable energy, agriculture, and vocational training projects in major cities like Erbil and Sulaymaniyah.

This momentum continued through 2023 and 2024, with Spanish business delegations visiting the Kurdistan Region to explore specific opportunities in transportation and agro-industry. Kurdish officials have concurrently been actively encouraging European partners to diversify their economic engagement.

The upcoming Madrid forum is a key component of the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) broader strategy to attract foreign direct investment and deepen economic partnerships with European Union member states.
