Kurdistan Region Inaugurates Major Gas Pipeline Between Erbil and Duhok
As part of its ongoing strategy to strengthen the energy infrastructure, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) inaugurated a major natural gas pipeline connecting Erbil and Duhok, stretching 198 kilometers. The project, implemented by KAR Group at a cost of $591 million, marks a significant step toward energy independence and sustainable power generation in the Region.
During the inauguration ceremony in Duhok, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani congratulated the investors, engineers, and workers involved, describing the project as a “strategic solution” that enables Duhok’s power plant to operate at full capacity after years of diesel shortages.
The Prime Minister stated that the new pipeline aligns with the KRG’s reform agenda, aimed at optimizing natural resource investment and improving public services. He revealed that gas production in the Kurdistan Region has doubled due to public and private sector investments, positioning Kurdistan as an emerging regional energy supplier capable of supporting both Iraq and neighboring areas.

Barzani also highlighted the environmental and economic benefits of the project, noting that it will reduce reliance on diesel fuel, lower production costs, and contribute to the government’s goal of providing 24-hour electricity through the “Ronaki Project.” He reaffirmed that work is ongoing to achieve this target across the entire Region by next year.
Delivering a strong political and economic message, the Prime Minister emphasized that Kurdistan’s oil, gas, and mineral resources are national assets belonging to all the people of Kurdistan, not to any individual, party, or political group. He stressed that these resources are managed fairly to benefit all governorates and cities in the Region.
On relations with Baghdad, Barzani expressed the Kurdistan Region’s willingness to assist the federal government in the energy sector while calling for reciprocal support to help extend vital services to Kurdistani areas outside the Region’s administration and to other parts of Iraq.
He further announced upcoming energy initiatives, including the Kormor–Chamchamal gas pipeline and programs to promote solar energy through low-interest loans for citizens.
The Prime Minister concluded by thanking the Ministries of Electricity and Natural Resources, the Ronaki team, and executing companies for overcoming challenges to complete the project. He also urged citizens to protect the environment and use electricity responsibly to ensure the sustainability of these achievements.
