Iraq Sounds Alarm After Cyberattacks Target Key Government Ministries

A surge of sophisticated cyberattacks has targeted Iraq's most sensitive government ministries and security agencies, raising serious concerns about the nation's digital defenses and the security of its confidential data.

The alarming breach, which compromised institutions including the Ministry of Interior, the National Security agency, and the Intelligence Agency, was first detailed in a report by the London-based newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed and later confirmed by Iraqi military officials.

On Saturday, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command addressed the situation, stating that the National Cyber Security Center had identified a "limited system" within several federal government bodies that had been successfully infiltrated by hackers.

While authorities were quick to clarify that essential public services remained unaffected and no operational breakdowns occurred, the admission has highlighted Iraq's persistent and critical cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

According to the report, the websites of major institutions, including the Integrity Commission and the Ministry of Health, were among those successfully hacked. Although control has since been regained, the frequency and boldness of these attacks have deeply worried security experts.

Cybersecurity analyst Ghassan Rabiei told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that the coordinated attacks signify "an increase in cyber threats against state institutions." He pointed out that the successful breaches expose significant weaknesses in Iraq's current digital security protocols.

Rabiei urged the government to "continuously update its electronic infrastructure and adopt stronger protective systems" to effectively counter the evolving landscape of digital threats.
