US, Syrian Officials, and SDF Commander to Hold Key Talks in Damascus

In a significant diplomatic move, US Special Envoy for Syrian Affairs Tom Barrack, Syria’s transitional leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, and Mazloum Abdi, General Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), are set to meet in Damascus to advance a crucial agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF.

The trilateral meeting, confirmed by Syrian media on Tuesday, aims to push forward the implementation of the March 10 agreement signed by al-Sharaa and Abdi. The deal outlines the integration of the SDF and the Autonomous Administration’s institutions in northeastern Syria into the Syrian state’s framework.

Prior to the main talks, Barrack and Abdi are expected to hold a separate bilateral discussion, though the location remains undisclosed.

Sources reveal that the Damascus meeting will address possible amendments to the existing agreement, including adjustments to the implementation timeline, currently set to conclude by the end of 2024. Proposed modifications may also incorporate Kurdish demands, subject to US approval.

Additionally, Syrian media reports indicate that France, alongside the US, will play a role in monitoring the agreement’s execution to ensure stability and prevent tensions between Damascus and the SDF.

Barrack is also expected to discuss coordination mechanisms between the US-led International Coalition, the Syrian government, and the SDF in ongoing operations against Islamic State (IS) cells in Syria.

The meeting marks a pivotal step toward consolidating control in northeastern Syria and advancing broader political settlement efforts. If successful, it could pave the way for deeper cooperation between Kurdish forces and the Syrian government under international oversight.
