Drone Attack Targets Baiji Oil Refinery; Kirkuk Airport Also Hit in Coordinated Strikes
The Baiji oil refinery in Salahaddin province was targeted by more than 10 drones at dawn on Tuesday, Baiji District Mayor Adel al-Duj confirmed. Iraqi air defenses intercepted the drones, preventing significant damage or casualties, though authorities have launched an investigation to determine responsibility for the attack.
In an audio statement to Iraqi media, al-Duj said, “The refinery was attacked at dawn, but our air defenses engaged the drones. No casualties were reported, and investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators.”
The assault on the Baiji refinery follows a separate attack late Monday on Kirkuk International Airport, where three projectiles struck the facility. Initial reports indicated a civilian sustained minor injuries, but officials later confirmed that airport operations were unaffected.
Kirkuk Governor Rebwar Taha linked the attack to recent counter-terrorism operations, stating, “This strike occurred after our security forces successfully eliminated several ISIS members on the outskirts of Kirkuk.” A local investigative committee has been formed to probe the incident.
The twin attacks underscore ongoing security threats in northern Iraq, where remnants of the Islamic State (ISIS) and other armed groups remain active. Iraqi forces have intensified operations against insurgent cells, but sporadic attacks on critical infrastructure persist.
