Iraq’s Shiite Coalition Condemns Israeli Strikes on Iran, Warns Against Use of Iraqi Airspace

Iraq’s ruling Shiite coalition, the Coordination Framework, held an emergency meeting on Sunday to address rising regional tensions after Israel’s recent strikes on Iran. The gathering was attended by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani and senior coalition leaders, who issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s actions.

In a statement following the meeting, the coalition denounced what it called the “repeated aggressive behavior of the Zionist entity,” referring to Israel’s reported attacks on Iran, which allegedly killed several Iranian military commanders, scientists, and civilians. The group urged the international community and regional powers to confront Israel’s “arrogance” and take steps to halt further military escalation.

The Coordination Framework also announced plans to organize protests across Iraq in solidarity with Iran, praising Tehran’s “resilience and steadfastness” against Israeli operations. Notably, the coalition firmly rejected any use of Iraqi airspace for attacks on neighboring countries, stressing the importance of preserving Iraq’s sovereignty and its role as a stabilizing force in the region.

The emergency meeting comes amid fears that the Israel-Iran conflict could spill over into Iraq, where armed factions have already threatened retaliation and renewed calls for the expulsion of U.S. forces if Washington becomes involved in the hostilities. The statement reflects Baghdad’s efforts to navigate escalating regional tensions while avoiding direct entanglement in the conflict.
