Kurdistan PM Celebrates Kurdish Athlete Agit Kabayel’s Boxing Victory, Honors Sculptor Shwan Kamal
Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani hosted a meeting on Tuesday with world-renowned Kurdish boxer Agit Kabayel, celebrating his recent victory and reaffirming support for Kurdish athletes on the global stage.
In a statement, the KRG said PM Barzani congratulated Kabayel on winning the WBC interim heavyweight title in February during a high-profile bout in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Prime Minister praised the athlete’s achievements and wished him continued success in his career.
Kabayel, who is based in Germany, expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and presented his championship belt to PM Barzani as a token of appreciation. The meeting underscored the importance of Kurdish athletes in raising the region’s profile worldwide and the need to foster talent across all sports.
Kabayel has risen through the ranks of the heavyweight division with a series of impressive wins, solidifying his reputation as one of the top Kurdish athletes in international boxing.
PM Barzani Honors Kurdish Sculptor Shwan Kamal
In a separate meeting, Prime Minister Barzani also welcomed renowned Kurdish sculptor Shwan Kamal, commending his contributions to art and culture. The Prime Minister praised Kamal’s works, which are displayed in cities across the Kurdistan Region and in several European countries, including Germany and Sweden.
Barzani emphasized the importance of supporting Kurdish artists and promoting cultural expression both locally and internationally.
Kamal, originally from Sulaymaniyah, was born in 1967 and graduated with honors in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad in 1991. He has lived in Germany since 1995, where he continues to produce and exhibit his art.
Expressing his gratitude, Kamal said such recognition from Kurdish leaders serves as a motivation for artists in the region and the diaspora.
The meetings highlight the KRG’s commitment to celebrating Kurdish talent in sports and the arts, reinforcing their role in showcasing Kurdistan’s achievements globally.
