Kurdistan President Reaffirms Support for UNITAD Mission
ERBIL — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Wednesday received Karim Ahmad Khan, the Special Adviser and Head of the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh (UNITAD), and reiterated his support for the mission.

Barzani and Khan discussed the progress in the investigations into Islamic State (IS) crimes, and emphasized on the importance of continued and close cooperation between Kurdistan, Iraq, and the UNITAD in the mission.

They also stressed that “serving justice to the victims of ISIS will lead to restoration of trust, stability and peaceful coexistence, as well as reconstruction of the devastated areas and the return of the displaced people to their homes,” according to the readout of the meeting.

The Kurdish president encouraged UNITAD to accomplish its mission according to its timetable, which would be in the best interest of all communities in Iraq due to the fact that everyone was affected by the IS atrocities.

Both sides also discussed the amendment of the relevant laws concerning the prosecution and trial of the perpetrators, the significance of paying attention to the education system in regards to improving tolerance, peaceful coexistence and the prevention of such horrendous crimes in the future.
