ERBIL — A Kurdish member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) was killed on Monday in the city centre of Piranshahr district, Western Azerbaijan.

The man was identified as Khalid Shwani who served in the IRGC special forces in the border areas of Iranian Kurdistan.

Locals said a group of armed men opened fire at Shwani and immediately escaped the scene before the security forces arrived.

This is the second attack of this kind after a Kurdish commander of IRGC was killed together with his aide in Piranshahr.

No Kurdish opposition groups or parties have yet claimed responsibility for Monday’s attack.
