Erdogan Hints Operation in Syria Regardless of US Talks
Erdogan said on Friday during a meeting with members of his AK Party that they should not trust “foreign powers” for the issues in the region, implying a distance from the US policies, at least in Syria.
“Those who put their trust in foreign powers in the region will be put under ground,” the Turkish president pointed out. “We will find a lasting solution to terror.”
Turkey has recently, on various occasions, warned of a military operation in the areas known as East Euphrates in northern Syria if a planned “safe zone” was not established by the US to oust the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) out of the border territories.
Earlier on Monday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said his country could carry out a cross-border operation against the YPG in northern Syria if Washington rejects the creation of the safe zone.
“If the safe zone is not established and threats towards our country continue, we will launch the operation in the east of the Euphrates,” he said back then.
