Abdul-Mahdi Confirms Iraq's Plan to Meditate Between US and Iran
The Iraqi premier was cited by Reuters on Tuesday as explaining that no Iraqi groups had attempted or wanted to trigger a war between Washington and Tehran. The statement came only two days after a rocket attack on the Green Zone where the US embassy is located.
Earlier the day, BasNews reported that Abdul-Mahdi is reportedly making preparations for sending two separate delegations to the US and Iran in hopes of defusing the tensions between the two sides.
A source told Baghdad Today that Iraq is attempting to invite officials from the two foreign countries to a negotiation table in Baghdad.
Earlier on Sunday, pro-Iranian Iraqi politician Ammar al-Hakim, revealed to Joey Hood, chargé d'affaires of the US embassy in Baghdad, during a meeting that Iraq could play the role of a mediator between US and Tehran.
