Iraqi electoral ballot storage facility burns in Erbil
“The reason behind the fire is not known yet. A committee should formed from some capable officers to investigate the cause of the fire and estimate its damage,” Brigadier General Shwan Abdulqadir, director of Erbil Fire Department, said in a press conference.
No human casualties were reported at Suqmarkzai, an area of Erbil between 40 Meter Road and 100 Meter Road.
“Only the hall where the commission’s equipment was stored has caught fire. Our teams fortunately put out the fire,” he added.
Structural damages will be accessed, said Kafi Abdulqadir, the spokesperson of Erbil Fire Department.
“As far as we know, this store had no guards and it is unclear what has caused the fire. The store has no fire-extinguishing system,” he said.
Iraq held a parliamentary election on May 12. Its results, disputed by some parties, were eventually accepted after months of challenges which resulted in no real changes to the original outcome among major parties.
Iraq is long overdue to hold provincial elections; however, more than 1.6 million Iraqis remain displaced, according to International Organization for Migration statistics.
